Much has been made by various essential oil companies of their oils being therapeutic-grade.  One company, Young Living Essential Oils, actually coined the term, specifically to set its products apart from other Grade-A oils being sold for aromatherapy.

The problem is, all too often, these supposedly therapeutic-grade essential oils don't quite live up to their billing.  Sometimes their chemical profile just doesn't meet an acceptable standard, other times, the chemistry looks good — but only because it has been spiked with a synthetic chemical.  Some oils, marketed as therapeutic-grade, are actually totally synthetic.  (This is especially deflating to the emotions when the company had been a leader in producing quality oils.)
