About marjoram oil:
The Romans knew marjoram as the "herb of happiness"; to the Greeks, it was the "joy of the mountains". Most well known as a culinary herb, marjoram also has some valuable medicinal uses.
Marjoram is closely related to oregano, and has similar properties. However, it is most often thought of as a natural muscle relaxant, and is chosen to address such issues as sore muscles and joints, as well as sprains and back pain.
Marjoram oil is certified GRAS by the FDA, so it is safe to ingest.
Key properties of marjoram oil
Primary constituents of marjoram:
- Monoterpenes (primarily pinene)
- Alcohols (primarily linalool)
Some of the therapeutic properties of marjoram oil include: analgesic, anti-bacterial, antibiotic, anti-fungal, antioxidant, anti-spasmodic, anti-viral, disinfectant, expectorant, sedative and stimulant.
Common uses for marjoram oil
For minor stomach complaints, like indigestion, stomach ache or constipation, you can drink 1-2 drops of marjoram oil, mixed with agave, honey, water or juice.
Marjoram oil can also be applied topically, massaged into the affected areas for sore muscles or joint, sprains, sore backs, necks, for its anti-spasmodic effects.
At the onset of cold, flu or respiratory distress symptoms, either diffuse marjoram or massage into the chest, neck and lymph nodes.
For menstrual issues, massage marjoram oil on the lower back and lower abdomen. And, of course, menstrual issues — as well as just plain stress — can be addressed by adding marjoram to a warm bath. The best way to do this is to dilute the oil in Himalayan Crystal Salt or Epsom's salts, before adding to the bath water.
Modern research into marjoram oil
A recent study looked into the effectiveness of Origanum majorana to treat high blood pressure. Marjoram oil was used in massage therapy on 126 subjects, after which, both the diastolic and systolc levels were lowered.
Clinical studies are on-going about the efficacy of marjoram as a mind relaxant and calming agent.
