About Melissa oil from dōTERRA®:
Melissa essential oil is steam distilled from the fresh flowering tops, leaves and stems of the Melissa officinalis plant. Because it has such an extremely low yield (less than 1/10 of 1%; it takes three tons of melissa to produce one pound of oil), it very rare. As a result, it's one of the most commonly adulterated oils. Quality melissa oil sells for $9,000 to $15,000 per kilo.
The Melissa officinalis plant is very gentle and delicate, and melissa oil helps to bring out those characteristics in an individual. It is also calming to the nerves, addresses stomach discomfort, supports mood, and seasonal bugs. During the cold season, melissa oil is comforting and supportive to immune system function.
On a personal note: I have used melissa oil on my lips, which get cracked and peeling (sometimes), due to a chronic viral (EB) condition. I've found it to be quite effective for this.
I also have weakened adrenal glands, so when I have a lot of things to do, my heart tends to get overstimulated and my blood pressure rises. I read in Modern Essentials that melissa oil should be good for this. So, I massaged less than a drop of melissa into my temples. I felt an almost immediate unspooling of tension in my system. It was quite amazing.
Melissa officinalis was an important ingredient in Carmelite water, distilled in France since 1611, by members of the Carmelite Order.
